The Story Behind Which Way Now

WHICH WAY NOW?

The image captures a moment of physical pivot, frozen in the damp grit of the shoreline. Two parallel lines of footprints, marching with purpose toward an unseen horizon, suddenly converge and dissolve into a singular, messy indentation where the walker has turned on their heels. It is a visual representation of a mind changing its course, a literal “about-face” etched into the earth.

A Playful Divertissement?

At first glance, one might see nothing more than beach fun. Perhaps a child, mid-sprint toward the foaming surf, was suddenly beckoned back for a sandwich or a fresh coating of sunscreen. It could be the mark of a simple game of tag, or a “seasider” testing the texture of the sand before deciding it was too wet for a comfortable stroll. In the context of a holiday, these marks are the joyous, mindless graffiti of leisure—evidence that someone was here, was active, and was free.

The Philosophical Pivot

However, the title “Indecision” invites us to look for something deeper. There is a profound human weight to the act of turning back. In a philosophical sense, these footprints represent the “Road Not Taken,” or rather, the road taken and then immediately rejected.

The Weight of Choice: Each step forward represents a commitment to a direction. The pivot point is the moment of crisis where that commitment fails.

The Internal Conflict: The artist (if we choose to view the walker as such) might be illustrating the paralysis of choice. Do we go forward into the unknown, or return to the safety of where we started?

The Message: Is this a message to a fellow seasider, a warning that the path ahead is treacherous? Or is it a silent scream about the futility of planning in a world that shifts like sand?

The Temporary Canvas

The most poignant aspect of this scene is its transience. Whether this was an intentional philosophical point or a moment of simply playing, the result is the same. The sea, indifferent to human drama or intellectual posturing, is already on its way.

The incoming tide serves as the ultimate cosmic eraser. It will flood these indentations, levelling the ridges and filling the hollows until the sand is as smooth and featureless as a fresh sheet of paper. There is a certain peace in that faded glory of the mark; the beach doesn’t hold onto our mistakes, our indecision, or our triumphs for long.

The artist’s “important point” is destined to be a secret shared only between the sand and the spray. We are left only with the photograph, a permanent record of a temporary doubt.
